Christian Weir Charges Through the Field with 29-Car Overtaking Masterclass at COTA
May 30 2025
AUSTIN, Texas – TechSport Racing driver Christian Weir delivered a spectacular overtaking clinic at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) during rounds 3 and 4 of the Toyota GR Cup North America. Driving the No. 71 Toyota GR86, Weir overcame a mandatory pit lane start to pass a combined 29 cars over the double-header weekend, sealing a memorable, high-stakes top-five result.
Pit Lane Start to Points in Race 1
Serving a carryover penalty from incident responsibility in Sonoma Race 2, Weir was forced to start Race 1 from the pit lane. Relinquishing his grid spot and waiting for the entire 31-car field to pass, Weir put on a masterclass once he hit the 3.4-mile, 20-turn track. He masterfully sliced through the pack to pass 13 cars in Race 1, salvaging an incredible recovery and setting the stage for Sunday.
Hard Charger Performance in Race 2
Sunday’s Race 2 cemented Weir’s status as the weekend’s standout overtaking specialist. Starting from the back rows once more, he relentlessly moved through the pack, navigating high track temperatures, aggressive multi-car battles, and late-race caution periods.
By the time the checkered flag fell, Weir had passed an incredible 16 cars in Race 2 alone, earning well-deserved “Hard Charger” honors. His forward surge culminated in a sensational 5th-place overall finish, securing vital championship points for himself and the TechSport Racing squad.
“We made up a total of 29 positions in two races at COTA after starting from the pit lane, and had a blast doing it,” said Weir. “Thanks to TechSport Racing for the incredible support and giving me a remarkably fast car to fight through the field.”
Looking Ahead
Leaving Texas with substantial momentum and a proven ability to battle through the pack, Weir and the TechSport Racing team will carry this competitive edge into the next round of the Toyota GR Cup North America calendar at Sebring International Raceway.
