CHRISTIAN WEIR SURVIVES TERRIFYING HIGH-SPEED BRAKE FAILURE AT ROAD AMERICA AFTER STRONG SHOWING

August 21 2025 | ELKHART LAKE, Wis. – American racing driver Christian Weir demonstrated front-running pace during the Toyota GR Cup North America weekend at Road America, before a catastrophic mechanical failure cut his promising weekend short. Driving the #71 Racing to End Alzheimer’s Toyota GR86, Weir walked away from a massive, high-impact accident during Sunday’s Race 2.

The weekend began on a high note at the iconic 4.048-mile road course. Facing a highly competitive field of sports car drivers, Weir found immediate speed. During Saturday’s qualifying session, he clocked a blistering lap time to secure a strong 8th-place starting position on the grid, placing him firmly in striking distance of the front runners.

In Saturday’s Race 1, Weir battled fiercely in the top ten, showcasing the sharp racecraft and consistent pace that have defined his breakout season.

However, Sunday’s Race 2 brought sudden and violent heartbreak. While charging down the fast straightaways toward Canada Corner—one of the fastest and most unforgiving sectors on the circuit—Weir’s car suffered a total, catastrophic brake failure. With zero stopping power at peak speed, the #71 machine pitched sideways, hurtling off the track before making a violent, crushing impact with the tire barriers.

The sheer force of the crash heavily damaged the car. Thanks to the rigorous safety standards of the Toyota GR86 build and the swift action of trackside safety crews, Weir was able to exit the wreckage under his own power. He was later diagnosed with a severe concussion and intense physical trauma.

“Canada Corner is probably one of the worst corners anywhere for this to happen,” Weir stated, recalling the terrifying moment. “I am incredibly thankful to the structural safety of the car for protecting me, and relieved I didn’t collect any other drivers on the way off the track.”

Due to the prolonged recovery process required for brain injuries and the total loss of the car, Weir will temporarily step away from the cockpit to focus on his medical recovery, forcing him to miss the upcoming rounds.

The Racing to End Alzheimer’s program and the Weir family extend their deepest gratitude to the medical staff, corner marshals, and fans for their overwhelming outpouring of support.
