CHRISTIAN WEIR SHOWS AGGRESSIVE PACE AT SONOMA TOYOTA GR CUP OPENER BEFORE POST-RACE PENALTIES ALTER RESULTS [1, 2]

SONOMA, Calif. — Up-and-coming racing driver Christian Weir demonstrated striking frontline pace during the 2025 Toyota GR Cup North America season opener at Sonoma Raceway, though his official results were heavily altered by post-race officiating. Piloting the No. 71 TechSport Racing Toyota GR86, Weir crossed the finish line in a provisional third place after a chaotic Race 2, but a series of late-stage on-track incidents ultimately relegated him down the order following a strict post-race review. The high-intensity season opener at Sonoma saw intense wheel-to-wheel action across a packed spec-series grid. Weir fought in the lead pack throughout the race, placing his TechSport Racing machine directly in the hunt for a podium spot. [1]

However, the final laps were marred by intense contact. A side-by-side battle at the Turn 9 chicane resulted in a collision with Ethan Ayars, triggering a multi-car melee that swept up a Legends Cup competitor. Weir was also cited for a separate final-lap collision with top-five runner Spike Kohlbecker at Turn 11. [1, 2]

Following an extensive post-race investigation by SRO officials, Weir was assessed two separate 50-second time penalties for incident responsibility. The total 100-second penalty stripped away his third-place finish and dropped him well down the official leaderboard. Additionally, series officials ruled that the driver of the No. 71 machine must start the upcoming race at Circuit of The Americas from the pit lane. [1, 2]

“The racing at Sonoma was incredibly intense, and we proved we have the outright speed to run right at the front of this grid,” said Weir. “While the post-race decisions and penalties are a tough pill to swallow for the whole TechSport Racing crew, we have to look at the positives. The car was fast, our pace was there, and we will channel that hunger into our rebound at COTA.” [1]

With the opening weekend concluded, Weir and the TechSport Racing team will shift focus toward navigating the pit-lane start penalty and maximizing a comeback performance at Rounds 3 and 4 of the Toyota GR Cup calendar. [1, 2]
