After a two-month break, the Toyota GR Cup North America is roaring back to life, with Christian Weir eager to hit the track again. The Virginia International Raceway (VIR) will host the fourth event for the GR86 machine, marking the halfway point in the series’ calendar.
“It has been a long break, but I put the off time to good use,” says Christian Weir. Indeed, it has been a busy period for Christian. He graduated high school and organized the Drive for 155, a charity go-kart race that raised over $155,000 for DuPagePads and their mission to end homelessness. “I spent a good amount of time on my sim and was able to get on track a few times at Autobahn Country Club,” Weir explains. “Any seat time is better than no seat time. Having both Autobahn’s kart track and the car track at my disposal is something I feel very fortunate to have.”
VIR’s 3.2-mile, 12-turn track has always been a favorite for Christian. “I love VIR. The challenging and flowing layout suits me. I’ve had some of my best races there,” he shares. “I have a new partner joining me at VIR, and they will be with me for the rest of the season. We will soon be announcing who they are, so stay tuned.”
From July 17 to 20, the GR Cup will be on track alongside SRO’s GT World Challenge America powered by AWS. It promises to be a jam-packed event, featuring two days of practice and testing, followed by two days of qualifying and racing. Keep up with all the action at www.grcupseries.com/watch-live.
