After a solid points haul and competitive performances at Circuit of the Americas, Christian Weir is ready to keep the momentum going this coming weekend at Sebring International Raceway. Sebring is the next event in the Toyota GR Cup North America and the competition is going to be just as hot as the central Florida weather.
Currently sitting 8th in the championship, Christian plans to continue to recover from a tricky start to the season. “I am not going to let a set back here or there discourage me. If I can finish every race in the top 5, the championship is not out of reach.” explains Christian. “Obviously I always want to be on the podium, but I also know I need to race smart and that is what I plan to do.”
The Toyota GR Cup is seeing it’s most competitive year since the inaugural 2023 season. There have been 3 different winners in 4 races. “The talent is deep and the racing is phenomenal.” continues Weir. “There is potential for a different race winner at each event.” The GR Cup is part of SRO’s GT World Challenge America powered by AWS and has very quickly become a fan favorite.
Sebring International Raceway is one of the oldest continuous running racetracks in the United States. The track is often recognized for its famous, high-speed “Turn 17”, a long, bumpy, fast right-hander that can make or break a car’s speed down the front straight. The corner can fit up to three cars wide. “I have a lot of laps in at Sebring in a lot of different cars, but not in the GR86.” says Christian. “I was all ready to test with the team in February at Sebring but came down with the flu. It killed me to miss out but that doesn’t mean I won’t be ready to race.”
Christian will be part of TechSport Racing’s 5 car line-up. TechSport was the series’ first championship winning team and was a runner-up last year. They are hungry to regain their title and are looking to Christian and its young driver line-up to help them get back their crown. A goal Christian shares and hopes play a significant role in achieving.
The GR Cup’s action will kick off Thursday and Friday with practice and test sessions. Saturday and Sunday will both feature a qualifying and race. Fans won’t have to miss a moment of the action — all qualifying sessions and races from Sebring will be streamed live at grcupseries.com/watch-live. The full weekend schedule can be found here.
